This Day in Rock History - June 3rd
1970: Ray Davies, front man for the Kinks, flies from America to England to re-record the words “cherry cola” on the song “Lola” after the BBC refuses to air the song with the original lyric, “Coca-Cola.” Davies then immediately flies back to the States.
This Day in Rock History - June 2nd
1964: The Rolling Stones play their first live gig in America. Not quite as glamorous as the Beatles, the band plays at a high school in Lynn, Massachusetts.
They also make their U.S. television debut on The Les Crane Show.
This Day in Rock History - June 1st
1971: Gladys Knight and the Pips are the very last musical guests to perform on The Ed Sullivan Show, which was cancelled in 1971 after 23 years on the air. It remains the longest-running variety show in TV history.
During the 1960s, virtually every major rock act performed on the show (not to mention every top plate-spinning act as well)!
This Day in Rock History - May 31st
1956: Buddy Holly went to the movies. He attends a showing of the John Wayne Western The Searchers at the State Theatre in Lubbock, Texas. Twice during the film, Wayne sarcastically remarks, “That’ll be the day.”
Holly goes home and writes a song around that phrase that will lift him out of obscurity to his first taste of rock ‘n’ roll fame.
BTW - The movie's title was also the inspiration for the British Invasion band, the Searchers.
This Day in Rock History - May 30th
1972: Bryan Ferry and his band Roxy Music make their stage debut in Lincolnshire, England, at the Great Western Express Festival.
This Day in Rock History - May 29th
2009: Legendary rock producer/songwriter, Phil Spector is sentenced to life in prison for the shooting death of 40-year old Lana Clarkson. The then 69-year old Spector had met the woman at an L.A. nightclub in February of 2003. He took her home and in less than 2 hours, she was dead.
Spector dies while still in prison in January of 2021.
This Day in Rock History - May 28th
1958: Buddy Holly receives his draft notice from the Lubbock, Texas draft board. Unlike Elvis, Holly is refused induction when his notoriously poor eyesight causes him to flunk the vision test.
This Day in Rock History - May 27th
1989: The Beach Boys begin a national tour with Chicago. The tour is historic because Brain Wilson appears at several dates, marking his first concerts with his old band since 1975.
This Day in Rock History - May 26th
1967: It was 58 years ago today… Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play!
What many consider the greatest rock album of all-time, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, goes on sale in Britain. A week later it will be released in the States. It is the first Beatles LP to have the exact same track listing in the US and in the UK.
It will top the album charts during the entire "Summer of Love.”
This Day in Rock History - May 25th
1978: As part of the documentary, The Kids Are Alright, being assembled about their career, the Who perform a special concert at London’s Shepperton Film Studios.
It will prove to be the last time the group performs with drummer Keith Moon.
