1986: Mickey Dolenz joins Peter Tork and Davy Jones to perform as the Monkees for the first time in years. The group kicks off their tour at the Concord Hotel in the Catskills.

Instead of a reunion, might it have been better to call it a rerun?

1977: Jefferson Starship is banned from playing a free concert at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. The group responds by recording “We Built This City.” Whether that's a good or bad thing is still being debated.

This Day in Rock History - May 22nd

1958: A day for which Jerry Lee Lewis would probably want a “do-over.” It was on this day that Lewis arrived in London and introduced his new bride to the press. The press did some digging and found out 1.) Myra Gale Lewis was 13 years old 2.) She still believed in Santa Claus and 3.) She was Jerry Lee’s third cousin. The ensuing scandal effectively derailed his career in rock and roll.

Jerry Lee will lay low for a while and then stage his first comeback as a country singer.

1955: Chuck Berry recorded “Maybellene.” It became one of the first rock tunes to crack Billboard’s Top 10 and helped introduce white kids to real R&B.

1965: Leaving a concert in Long Beach, California, the Rolling Stones limo is virtually attacked by female fans. So many of them scramble onto the vehicle’s roof that it starts to collapse. The band attempts to support the roof with their hands. The limo speeds away, leaving fans to fall onto the road.

1971: Pink Floyd plays a concert at the Crystal Palace Bowl in London. The venue is next to a large lake and the high volume of the band’s amplifiers is responsible for killing a large number of fish. No reports on how many fish suffered drug overdoses.
